Joan in the "expensive seat" of the Bouleuterion which is where town councils were held. Unlike theaters, you had to be a citizen to vote here, which most people were not. I gave a rousing speech in favor of tax increases here just to test to acoustics. No one has to do much persuasion to convince people to keep their money. Thankfully, no one threw stones, of which there were many available. Some seats were engraved with the owners (and later family's) name. I think Joan voted against the tax increase and our 1000 ships stayed home. Of course, these days it's popular to launch a 1000 ships on borrowed money.

Pipes used for city plumbing - water in and waste out is the key to maintaining population of any size. This is the site of the Lydian (and later) ancient city of Ephesus. The view is toward where the ancient harbor was. At its height around 100AD, Ephesus was home to 400,000 - 500,000 souls, making it the largest city in the Roman Empire at one point. It was the NYC of its day.

Ephesus was an important center for early Christianity from the AD 50s. From AD 52-54, Paul lived here, working with the congregation and apparently organizing missionary activity into the hinterlands. He became embroiled in a dispute with artisans, whose livelihood depended on selling the statuettes of Artemis in the Temple of Artemis (Acts 19:23–41). He wrote between 53 and 57 A.D. the letter 1 Corinthians from Ephesus (possibly from the "Paul tower" close to the harbour, where he was imprisoned for a short time). Later Paul wrote to the Christian community at Ephesus, according to tradition, while he was in prison in Rome (around 62 A.D.) (source: Wikipedia)

This is a picture of what an interior room of one of the upper class houses looked like. There were very wealthy people in Ephesus whose homes occupied the southern hills and are currently being excavated. Some of these homes, in which the extended family lived, were "Bill Gates" sized.

View from the theater seats. This place was spectacularly grand in its day. By the way, Sting played here exactly once. He did a promotional concert and then they realized the intense sound was moving the stones and the authorities forbade any future use. This is the theater where Paul's comrades were dragged. (See Acts 19:29).

The Lydians conquered the Greek city of Ephesus in 560BC. Croesus, King of the Lydians, purported to be the richest man of his day, built the Temple of Artemis, the largest building in the ancient world, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Temple was designed by the Greek architect Chersiphron and had 121 Ionic marble pillars each sixty feet tall, and a wooden roof. It also served as a bank and attracted visitors as a place of pilgrimage. It burned down on the day of Alexander the Great's birth. Of course, the idol Artemis in her temple was much larger than the one depicted here. The idol was carved from a meteorite most likely (see Acts 19.35). Artemis of the Ephesians was depicted differently than Diana of the Romans. Diana was the twin of Apollo in Roman mythology, and daughter of Zeus. I will resist the temptation to talk about Troy now! Anyway, Artemis as a fertility goddess (those are either bull testes or breats across her midsection) appears quite differently than Diana who is young and a huntress with a bow. Instead, what we see here is similar to images of the Phrygian (central Anatolia) goddess Cybele, who is a still more ancient "mother goddess." Cybele may be related to the Canaanite goddess Asherah (see 1 Kings 18:19).

Looking along the side of Ayasuluk Hill on which the ruins of the Basilica and the Citadel sit. The Apostle John is purported to be buried here where the Basilica was built. Ayasuluk Hill is the original site of the Attic-Ionian colony founded in 10th C. BC.

View looking down from Ayasoluk Hill to the town of Seljuk. The monument in the center of the picture is the extent of the sea in ancient times. This location has quite a history. Before the Romans, the Lydians, before them Ionian and Mycenae Greeks. This place has been inhabited since 6,000 BC.

Ayasuluk Castle (Citadel of Ayasuluk) was built by the Romans (Byzantines) between the 7th to 9th centuries as protection against Arab and pirate attacks. Ayasoluk Hill is part of Selçuk (pronounced 'Seljuk'). Selçuk is located in the foothills of the Aydin mountains and was on the Aegean shore in ancient times before the Cayster River silted and ocean water levels were higher.

Wall of the Heroon, the place where a special meal was taken in honor of the "deified Pergamum kings." After the Seleucid King Antiochus III (aka "the Great") died, his eldest son ascended the throne while his younger son (later known infamously to history as Antiochus Epiphanes) was recalled from exile in Rome where he was a Roman hostage due to the treaty of Magnesia. When his elder brother was murdered by his Treasurer, AE allied with the Attalid kings of Pergamum, specifically, Eumenes, who had opposed AE's father, and regained control of the Seleucid kingdom. This most improbable event was prophesied by the Jewish prophet Daniel in Daniel Chap 11. Attalos III willed the his kingdom to Rome in 133 BC. He greatly admired Rome and had no heir so decided to spare his people a bloody succession.

The theater only sat 10,000 spectators which makes it about 1/4 or 1/7 the size of the theater in Ephesus. The tower you see is actually Byzantine, but the theater was built between 165 BC and 200 BC.

Pergamum also had a library which rivaled Alexandria. When the Ptolemies embargoed papyrus to Pergamum and Ephesus, Pergamum invented a new writing surface called "parchment". It was the skin of a sheep. To be efficient, they wanted to write on both sides, so they started creating codices instead of scrolls. Pergamum eventually held over 200,000 volumes in its library.

Looking down on the site where the Temple to Zeus stood. This is where the temple stood which is now in the Berlin Museum having been moved there with the Ottoman's permission in the late 19th C. This Temple is what the Apostle John referred to as "Satan's seat" in Rev Chap 2.

Pergamum was the third city of Revelation Chap 2, after Ephesus and Smyrna (modern Izmir), and followed by Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphis and Laodicea. All 7 cities formed a circuit around a small region along the west coast of the Anatolian peninsula (on or near the Aegean Sea). Each place would have been well known to the Apostle John who lived and discipled in Ephesus and was imprisoned on the Roman penal colony island of Patmos, off shore of Ephesus.

One of the greatest "hospitals" of the ancient world, which was also a temple, was located here in Pergamum. This was in the second century AD, when Pergamum had amassed a library of codices which rivaled the scrolls of Alexandria, thanks to the Pergamum invention of parchment paper, which was made from animal skins and was a serious challenge to the papyrus of Egypt.
